Freedom: Not Just Another Word

  • IET Savoy Place 2 Savoy Place London, England, WC2R 0BH United Kingdom (map)

I will be bringing poetry prescriptions and the poetry booth to join Freedom from Torture’s biennial literary event, FREEDOM: NOT JUST ANOTHER WORD.

“Taking place in the prestigous Maxwell Library at the IET Savoy Place, this exclusive event will bring together best-selling authors, torture survivors and supporters for an engaging and unforgettable experience exploring the theme of ‘Freedom’- something which has been so brutally taken away from survivors.

Booker Prize-winning author Julian Barnes and Tracy Chevalier, creator of Girl with a Pearl Earring will be performing alongside Women’s Prize for Fiction-winner Kamila Shamsie (Home Fire) and the EBRD Prize-winning novelist and former Freedom from Torture client Burhan Sönmez (Istanbul Istanbul). Survivors of torture from our creative writing group Write to Life will be reading some of their own powerful and moving pieces about 'freedom'.

You will have the chance to take home your own 'poetry prescription' created by poet and therapist Ronna Bloom and take part in a Grand Raffle to win exclusive prizes. A special highlight will be the premiere of a short film and display of kites created by survivors of torture, inspired by Khaled Hosseini's novel The Kite Runner.

Throughout the evening, you will have the chance to bid in an interactive auction for unique literary-themed prizes and experiences. These will include an original illustration by Sir Quentin Blake, a signed film script from Dame Helen Mirren, a chance to become immortalised as a character name in a novel, and more!”
