Poetry as medicine

I had a terrific conversation with Dr. Mary Elliott, psychiatrist and psychotherapist of Princess Margaret Cancer Care Centre for the podcast for “The Lift.” We spoke about poetry, health care workers, spontaneity, vulnerability and need. All things we are now.

“I think that it’s a very forgiving process to do something like that, Spontaneous Poetry, because on the very simplest of levels someone is listening. If I write any words down and give them back, I’ve reflected something back that’s been heard. That’s a big gift to many people. Then if, by fluke, it actually has something of poetry in it, and something of truth in it, well then it’s really something.”
